Speeches and Workshops:

Topics Include

We’re Still Family: What Grown Children Have to Say About Their Parents' Divorce.

Based on her newest book, Ahrons presents findings from her 20-year study on divorced families.  She summarizes her interviews with 173 young adults whose parents divorced twenty years ago and discusses implications for practice and policy.  Providing sound, practical advice, professionals will gain new knowledge and skills to use in their work with divorcing families and with grown children whose parents are divorced.

The Long-term Effects of Divorce on Children

Dr. Ahrons presents and discusses the newest research findings on the long-term effects of divorce on children.  After summarizing and evaluating the current findings she discusses how misinformation has guided current mental health practice and legal decisions.  With a focus on custody, living arrangements and coparenting, Ahrons presents clear directives on the how to insure the “best interests of children.”

21st Century Families:  Diversity and its Challenges

Although we all know that American families have changed in dramatic ways, we lack information about the characteristics of our diverse families and how they impact the people who live in them.   As polarized discussions emerge about whether one family structure is better than another for children, new stereotypes have developed.  In this talk, Dr. Ahrons discusses the range of family types and provides information about the challenges that each type present.

The Good Divorce: Keeping Your Family Together When Your Marriage Comes Apart

Ahrons addresses the negative myths that linger and reinforce an adversarial approach to divorce.   She discusses the impact of the legal system and explains how it escalates conflict between divorcing parents.   Providing the key essentials for a good divorce Ahrons gives concrete examples of how parents can achieve this goal.

The Postdivorce Family: A Neglected Treatment Area

Ahrons challenges current treatment approaches and provides a new brief consulting model.  Using excerpts from her video, Making Divorce Work, she shows how to work with the whole family.

Stepfamilies After Divorce: Complex Relationships and Confusing Loyalties

Almost 90% of those who divorce remarry.   Remarriage can be an even more distressing family transition than divorce.   Ahrons identifies the pitfalls that stepparents often fall prey to and explains how remarried families are different from first married families.

Divorce: Why Has it Become the New Plague on Families?

Ahrons challenges prevailing beliefs and attitudes toward divorce and shows how they are steeped in fears about marriage.  She shows how these fears inhibit social policies and support the current mythology that divorce inevitably destroys children and families.   Her suggestions for needed changes in legal and court practices as well as current policies are innovative and far-reaching.

Interpreting Research Findings:  Questions Judges, Lawyers and Mental Health Practitioners Need to Ask           In this practical presentation, Ahrons explains the misuse of statistics and identifies how the non-researcher can easily learn to decipher the research jargon.  She teaches how to evaluate a research sample and the research design and explains the misuse of such terms as “causal” and “correlational.”  She provides a set of questions to use when reading research findings, including assessing whether the conclusions set forth by the researcher are consistent with the data presented.
